Peugeot 208 GTi announced for Paris public debut. On sale next year.

I remember all those years ago in the mid eighties seeing my first Peugeot 205 GTi, it was in a copy of CAR magazine that a few of us school going car nuts had bought between us.

Seeing photos of this beefed up 205 was excitement at its purest, exciting because the phrase Hot Hatch really stood for something back then, it wasn’t just attached to any hatchback that came with fog lights a set of alloys and some floor mats with red piping.

A lot cars have come along since were someone will try to draw a comparison between it and the 205 GTi, when the RCZ was announced you couldn’t read anything without a mention of it.

But now we really do have something to compare like for like, Peugeot have confirmed that they will introduce a 208 GTi in spring 2013 and it’s set to make it’s public debut at the Paris Motor Show at the end of this month.

Some Technical Stuff

It will be powered by a 1.6 litre petrol engine with a reported 200 bhp, 203 lb ft torque with a 0 – 100 km/h of less than 7 seconds. CO2 is likely to be 145 g/km, which will see it just falling into tax band C.

On the outside the GTi is 10mm wider at the front and 20mm wider at the rear, has added side sills and swollen wheel arches filled with17 inch alloys which give it a tougher and more appealing hot hatch look.

The interior is finished in black leather with red stitching, a two tone effect which carries throughout, but no bright red carpets. Oh well can’t have it all I guess.

Marie Beaumont, 208 GTi Product Manager, said: “The 208 was an excellent base for developing a sports hatchback. We have worked with particular attention on the steering response, the chassis dynamics and the rigidity of the suspension. The 208 GTi successfully combines performance, safety and driving pleasure.”
