Lessons from the chop shop, BMW Zagato Roadster

BMW and Zagato have revealed their latest coming together at the 2012 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, the BMW Zagato Roadster. Earlier this year they revealed a concept Coupe at Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este and it was well received, justifiably so, it had an elegant design.
But, the Roadster doesn’t have the same exciting feel about it. It is the same design, minus a roof, and because of this it has a very different, and arguably, predictable boot design which leaves a gap in its overall flowing shape.
When the two are parked alongside each other it is obvious they came from the same set of plans, but the design was for a Coupe so it just looks like it was re-engineered quickly, to appear at a summer show.
At this point these cars are both only one-off concepts, or just a celebration of two engineering masters meeting to show what they could do together. Whatever their reasons, there’s no doubt the next “Z4” or replacement will be interesting whether it’s a Coupe or Roadster.
