The latest version of Mercedes’ SL is now available in Ireland with prices starting at €140,000 for the SL350.

There are two direct injection petrol versions available, a 3.5litre 302bhp V6 in the SL350 and a 4.7litre 429bhp, twin turbo V8 SL500.

This latest incarnation boasts better fuel consumption figures than its predecessors owing partly to a standard eco start/stop function, the SL350 it’s125kg lighter and claims to use 22% less fuel, with a 0-100km/h time of 5.9 seconds. While the SL500 will do 0-100km/h in 4.6 seconds and returns a 12% fuel saving.

One really nice option is a retractable panoramic sunroof that switches from light to dark at the push of a button converting your SL from roadster to coupé in seconds, also offered is an innovative wiper with integrated washer which doesn’t infringe on visibility when in use.

Commenting, Mercedes-Benz passenger car sales manager Ciaran Allen described the new SL as ‘a worthy bearer of a sixty-years old tradition and a car destined to become a classic from the day of its introduction
