Volkswagen have given thenextgear a sneaky peek at what’s coming in 2012.
Yes folks, things are looking UP with the launch of three new models and mid-life refits for others.
As well as the supermini, A segment UP, a new generation Beetle will roll off assembly lines – with a price tag of under €20,000.
Also in the pipeline is a new cross Polo, a miniture SUV which will go head-to-head with the Fiesta off roader and FIAT Panda 4X4.
There’s also big news on the technology and emissions front with news that VW will be introducing two sub 100g/km engines.
The Golf will avail of the 1.6 litre, 105bhp TDi diesel power plant which has a reading of 99g/km while returning 3.5l/100km or almost 80mpg.
The Polo is getting the all-new 1.2 litre, 75bhp petrol unit with a cough of 91g/km and an equally eye-watering return of 3.5l/100km.
We also got tipped off about a revolutionary new project – namely “cylinder shut off” which cuts fuel consumption by switching off two cylinders when the engine hits a cerain RPM band.
We reckon it will kick in while the car is cruising on a motorway for a prolonged amount of time.
Anyway all will be revealed soon, but what we do know is it’s a Tax Band A 1.4 litre, 140bhp petrol.
During a break from the press conference we managed to blag a spin in several of their big hitters including the ferocious Golf R.
The absolutely savage 270bhp rocket wasn’t quite let off the leash around Straffan in Co Kildare, but the bit of madness Phil experienced was enough to leave him panting for more.
We also had a brief encounter with the New Tiguan its big brother the Touareg, Jetta and Golf Cabrio which we will have exclusive access to in the coming months.
Watch this space.
